CSI seeks talks

Staff Reporter

To solve issues in education sector

Welcomes Prakash Karat’s call for talks

‘Did not share views of inter-church council’

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Church of South India (CSI) is for holding discussions to solve issues in the education sector, CSI moderator J.W. Gladstone said on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference here in connection with the inauguration of a women’s centre being set up the Women’s Fellowship of CSI South Kerala Diocese for family education and guidance in the capital, Dr. Gladstone said: “We are not in conflict. We are optimistic that the issues can be resolved through talks.”

The educational institutions, especially schools, managed by the South Kerala Diocese comprising 650 congregations extending from Kollam to Parassala were aided.

The CSI moderator welcomed CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat’s call to the Church authorities for talks with the LDF on the issues concerning them.

“I have just read what has come in the newspapers and TV channels. I can comment in detail only after collecting the facts.”

On Mr. Karat’s statement that it was not correct on the part of the Church authorities to issue pastoral letters against communist movement or making religious mobilisation part of politics, he said the CSI had not issued any pastoral letters in this regard.

“We have different committees and the issues are discussed in them.”

Against secularism

Dr. Gladstone pointed out that the CSI did not share the views of the Inter Church Education Council. Asked whether the CSI held the view that Christian students should be taught only in educational institutions run by Christian managements, he said it was against secularism.
