Allow Taslima to stay in country: Varavara Rao

Special Correspondent

Revolutionary writers resent her confinement

HYDERABAD: Revolutionary writer Varavara Rao on Wednesday demanded that Bagladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen be allowed to stay in the country and return to Kolkata.

In a representation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a copy of which was released to the press, he said “We, the revolutionary writers of Andhra Pradesh, wish to protest against the forced imprisonment of Taslima Nasreen, a Bengali writer, in Delhi, in a secret place”.

Describing her as a powerful writer, Mr. Rao said she fights for women’s liberation and criticises fundamentalist Muslims. He alleged that the West Bengal government, with the support of the Centre, was trying to stop her visa and banish her from the country. “This is an insult to you and me, the people who write”, he added.
