“Cultural changes create problems in society”

Staff Reporter

Religious harmony and amity needed

Remember sacrifices of freedom fighters

MADURAI: Major cultural changes, especially in relation to consumption and fundamental shifts in lifestyle, were creating problems in the society, said Ponnambala Desigar of Kundrakudi Mutt on Tuesday.

Addressing a seminar on ‘The role of religious harmony in national integration’ at Yadava College here, he emphasised that the need of the hour was religious harmony and amity among different castes, brotherhood, linguistic harmony and solidarity.

To find satisfaction over their own selfish needs every body was engaging in a new potentiality of mutual swindling and plundering, which was affecting the society badly, he said.

Quoting from the history of freedom movement, he asked the students to remember the sacrifices made by Shaheed Bhagat Singh, V. O. Chidamabaram and Subramania Bharati.

Recalling how the senior Kundrakudi Adigal worked hard to bring back peace after communal clashes at Mandaikadu in Kanyakumari district in 1982, he said, “Being a vegetarian, he went to the extent of taking fish in his hands to sell so that the community which refused to buy earlier turned emotional and accepted to buy.” He concluded his speech by saying that “our thoughts reflect our personality and true spirituality transcends identities.”

Christopher Asir, Bishop of Madurai-Ramnad Diocese, Church of South India, said that human life became complete only through a certain learning process, in which peace desired by individuals became utopia in isolation with the masses. He said that when political leaders with differing ideologies could come under a single platform and work, why could not people from different religions and castes work together.

M. Amanullah, secretary, Thiruvarut Peravai, spoke on the necessity to inculcate the feeling of religious harmony among the youth and spread ideals of brotherhood, spirit of tolerance and assimilation.

P. Rengan, Principal, spoke. A.R. Chandran, correspondent, presided.
