Notification for judges recruitment to be cancelled

A. Subramani

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government has decided to cancel a Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission notification inviting applications for the direct recruitment of Civil Judges (Junior Division).

The communication was sent to the Commission Secretary by the Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department on February 11, according to sources.

Mandatory norms

The decision to request the Commission to cancel the notification was taken in view of three specific deviations from mandatory norms, including a dispute over the number of vacancies to be filled through the recruitment. The notice said that though the May 8, 2007 order of the Home (Courts-IA) Department specifically mentioned that there were 181 vacancies to be filled by direct recruitment, the Commission’s notification sought to fill 201 vacancies, “which had not been approved by the Government.”

Discrepancy

There is a discrepancy between the notification and the GO in respect of the minimum qualifying marks too.

Besides, though the General Rules for the Tamil Nadu State and Subordinate Services shall not apply for the recruitment of fresh law graduates, the notification published by the Commission on February 7, 2008 stipulated that the rule would not apply to all categories, such as fresh law graduates and assistant public prosecutors and pleaders in the High Court and other subordinate courts.

The clause governing the upper age limit has also come in for criticism, with Pattali Makkal Katchi leader S. Ramadoss, the Madras High Court Advocates Association and the Tamil Nadu Advocates Association seeking to relax the age limit for candidates from reserved categories.
