Woman strangled; estranged husband, two daughters held

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: An elderly woman was strangled, allegedly by her estranged husband and two daughters, in Basaveshwaranagar police station limits on Sunday. The police said the murder came to light on Tuesday.

The police gave the name of the dead as Gangamma (58) of Kamalanagar. After divorcing her husband, Gangamma was living alone. She was working as a domestic help. She owned a site in Kamalanagar and a house in Shimoga. Fearing that Gangamma might give her property to her sister’s children, her former husband and daughters allegedly killed her, the police said.

The police have arrested her former husband Revanna (68), who works as a private security guard in Shimoga, and daughters Manjula (32) and Bhagyamma (30).

On Saturday, Bhagyamma also from Kamalanagar, asked her mother to come to her house. Revanna and Manjula came to Bhagyamma’s house from Shimoga on Sunday. Following a spat over Gangamma’s site and house, they allegedly strangled her and buried the body at Harishchandra Ghat burial ground. Later, Bhagyamma told her neighbours that her mother had died of a heart attack, the police said.

Suspecting foul play, Gangamma’s niece lodged a complaint with the Basaveshwaranagar police that her aunt could have been murdered. During interrogation, the accused confessed to the murder, the police said.
