Chandigarh: The Haryana Police on Thursday claimed to have succeeded in arresting 2572 accused and recovered a looted property of worth about Rs 119.88 lakh from them during the second fortnight of January, 2008 under its campaign launched to weed out anti-social elements from the State. Giving the details here, a spokesman of the Police Department revealed that the Police had nabbed five criminal gangs involved in dacoity, robbery, motor vehicle theft, burglary, other theft and arrested 20 proclaimed offenders and 138 bail jumpers during this period. He said that the Police had arrested 293 accused and solved 200 cases out of 658 registered under crime against property like robbery, dacoity, burglary, extortion and theft. The spokesman said that the State police had achieved a remarkable progress in working out 161 cases of murder, culpable homicide, hurt and kidnappings out of 180. As many as 228 accused were sent behind the bars in these criminal cases like murder, culpable homicide, hurt, kidnappings and abduction during the period under report. 111 cases solvedThe Police had also succeeded in solving 111 cases out of 123 cases registered against crime against women like dowry deaths, kidnapping and abduction, rape and molestation and arrested 113 persons involved in these cases in the State, he added. He said that the Police had also registered 279 cases under Excise Act and recovered 445 bottles of illicit liquor and 1129 bottles of licit liquor by convicting 39 persons and caught three working stills. Under the Gambling Act the Police had registered 60 cases and convicted 26 persons and recovered a sum of about Rs 3.18 lakh in cash whereas under the Satta Act, the Police had registered 176 cases by convicting 36 persons and recovered a sum of about Rs.1.05 lakh as satta money from them. Under the Narcotic Drugs Psychotropic Substance Act (NDPS), the Police had registered 35 cases and recovered 301.81 kg poppy husk, nearly 11.45 kg opium, 763.324 kg charas, o.031 gram smack, 179.006 kg ganja and 119 illegal arms along with 30 sharp-edged weapons. -- PTI
