Effective use of water in dry lands explained

TIRUNELVELI: The TVS – Agricultural Research Institute Farm at Ervadi celebrated the Farmers’ Day on Wednesday in a unique fashion by bringing the agriculturists from various districts to its premises to impart them first hand knowledge on the best water management practices, effective utilisation of available water to get maximum productivity in dry lands.

The TVS-ASRI farm has been developed in a relatively dry region as a demonstration field for the benefit of farmers from surrounding districts and for conducting live demonstration on rainwater harvesting, soil erosion control, open well recharging, producing nitrogen-rich organic matter from Glyricidia grown on the bunds, use of tropicultor to undertake various operations, cultivation of different crops simultaneously under irrigation conditions.

Over eleven hundred farmers from six districts of Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Ramanthapuram, Tuticorin and Virudunagar assembled at the Eruvadi farm for the Farmers’ Day celebrations to see the best farming practices. Scientists from the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) also gave valuable tips.

The Special Secretary, Department of Agriculture, Government of Tamil Nadu, Pradeep Yadav, stressed the need for imbibing good practices and technologies, which were demonstrated at the TVS-ICRISAT demonstration blocks.

S.P. Wani, Regional Coordinator, ICRISAT, highlighted theimportance of adopting Integrated Community watershed approach not only to harvest rainwater, but also to effectively use it for increased crop productivity and revenue of the farmers.

The Principal Scientist for Crop Improvement, ICRISAT, Dr. Gowda, underlined the importance of using improved crop varieties and gave examples of ICRISAT’s contributions in the area of rain-fed crops.

Dr. Vivekanandan, Dean, TNAU, Kullikulam campus, and V. Badrinarayan, TVS-ASRI Manager, also spoke.

Mr. Jalaludeen, president of Ervadi town panchayat, proposed a vote of thanks.
