This Day That Age
Russia’s Antarctic team has “conquered the Pole of Inaccessibility” – the largest and most desolate area on earth so far unexplored by man, Moscow Radio said on February 13. The Radio said a tractor and sledge team of the Soviet Antarctic expedition had set up base in the region, almost 2,000 kilometres from the nearest Antarctic coast, on February 10. The Pole of Inaccessibility is the furthest point from any Antarctic coast. Five Soviet scientists, led by Vitali Babarykik, will spend the winter at the station, according to Tass. The new station would play an important part in solving the movement and life of Antarctic glaciers. It would also carry out meteorological observations in connection with the International Geophysical Year and take radio soundings of the atmosphere.
