Migration

This refers to the argument that unchecked migration from other States into Mumbai is one of the causes of the trouble there. It is hunger that forces people to leave their homes in search of employment. Why are migrants preferred over the locals by employers who are also sons of the soil? Perhaps because of efficiency, productivity and economy which are crucial, particularly in the context of globalisation. Inability to compete cannot be an excuse to drive the immigrants out.

No city can be insulated against migration. But States such as Bihar and U.P. should take the cue from Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, from where a large number used to migrate to other States and countries such as Mauritius and South Africa in the pre-Independence era. They are now providing jobs to lakhs of youth, from other States too.

I lived in Mumbai for 36 years, and I know that outsiders have contributed a lot to the city’s growth. What is saddening is the timid approach of the Deshmukh government. The visual media should be strongly condemned for giving publicity to such a politician.

K.L. Bhaskaran,
