Mixed day for Kandla Port

MANGALORE: Kandla Port Trust had mixed fortunes on the opening day of the 29th All India major ports lawn tennis tournament, which got underway here on Thursday.

While Kandla defeated host New Mangalore Port Trust 3-1 in a group A fixture played earlier in the day, it was blanked 3-0 by last year’s winner Chennai later.

In group B, Visakhapatnam got the better of Goa 3-0. Goa also went down 3-2 in a thrilling tie against Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust later in the day.

Arvind Singh, Commissioner of Customs, inaugurated the three-day tournament earlier in the day. P. Tamilvanan, Chairman, NMPT was present.

The scores:

Group A: Kandla bt NMPT 3-1 (Sunil bt Sunil Furtado 9-6; Ranjit bt P.C. Chacko 9-8; Shiva/ Hari lost to Sukumar/ Vedarathnam 3-9; Sunil bt Chacko 9-0).

Group B: Vishakapatnam bt Goa 3-0 (K.R. Anil Kumar bt Mick Fernandes 9-0; Biju bt Sandesh Satardekar 9-1; K.R. Anil Kumar/ G.S.S. Kumar bt V.R. Murthy/ Patrick 9-0). — Staff Correspondent
