KOCHI: The Kerala State sub-junior basketball championship will be held at the Sacred Heart School Court, Thevara, here, from April 2 to 6. Boys and girls, born on or after January 1, 1995, are eligible. The State junior championship (cut-off date for players January 1, 1990) will be held at the Municipal basketball court, Alappuzha, from April 15 to 20 while the State youth championship (cut-off date January 1, 1992) will be in Kannur’s Mary Giri Senior Secondary School (Sreekantapuram). Christ College triumphsChrist College, Irinjalakuda, dethroned defending champion Payyannur College 2-1 and won the 45th Mar Thoma Trophy all-Kerala inter-collegiate football tournament at the Mar Thoma College ground at Thiruvalla on Thursday. Sumesh converted a 16th-minute penalty to give Christ the lead while Jimmy George netted another in the 55th. M.U. Sanesh scored Payyannur’s consolation goal in the 68th minute. Christ’s Ivin K. Jose was adjudged best player and Vinshob best goalkeeper. Payyannur’s M.U. Sanesh was named most promising player and St. Xavier’s College, Thumba, won the Fairplay Trophy. Chris Thomas, Coordinating Editor, Malayala Manorama, Pathanamthitta, gave away the prizes. HSIDC meets SDATHSIDC, Haryana, takes on SDAT, Chennai in the opening match of the National volleyball league preliminary round at Vatakara on Friday. The groupings: Men: Group A: HSIDC (Haryana), East Coast Railway, KSEB (Thiruvananthapuram) and SDAT (Chennai). Group B: Southern Railway, Punjab Police, Cochin Port Trust (Kochi) and Indian Bank (Chennai). Women: KSEB (Thiruvananthapuram), Western Railway (Mumbai), Dr. Sivanthi VB Club (Chennai) and South Eastern Railway. Chess tournamentThe Vijay Anandh Chess Academy will conduct a State-level chess tournament on February 23 and 24 at Urumu Dhanalakshmi College, Tiruchi.
