Advani against putting off polls

Staff Correspondent

L.K. Advani

Chitradurga: The former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani has asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party will oppose any move to postpone the Assembly elections in Karnataka.

Mr. Advani, who was here to inaugurate the Tarala Balu Hunnime Mahotsava at Holalkere taluk, told presspersons on Thursday, that the party was not against holding polls as per the delimitation plan, but it should be held as per schedule.

“The party will not tolerate any effort to defer the polls under the pretext of delimitation,” he said.

Mr. Advani said the BJP would urge the Election Commission to conduct polls at the earliest, as it was not in favour of extending President’s Rule.

Prediction

Predicting a BJP victory in the elections, Mr. Advani said it would get a clear mandate.

The party’s popularity among the people was growing in the State, the former Deputy Prime Minister stated.

On the arrest of terror suspects, Mr. Advani said the jehadi influence was getting strengthened in the State, particularly after the incident on the IISc. premises, where a scientist was killed.

Concern

“It is a matter of grave concern that the jehadi influence has extended to the educational field. The arrest of students in connection with terrorist activities is a clear example for it,” the BJP leader said.

If it came to power, the BJP, under the leadership of B.S. Yeddyurappa, would firmly tackle terrorist activities and ensure that peace was not disturbed in the State, he declared.

BJP’s national general secretary H.N. Ananth Kumar, Mr. Yeddyurappa and G.M. Siddeshwar, MP, were present.
