YSR comment draws flak

HYDERABAD: A remark made by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy drawing parallels between the solution to long-pending dispute on Kashmir and separate Statehood to Telangana drew flak from all quarters.

He said in the Assembly on Thursday that the decision on separate statehood would ultimately be taken by the Congress high command, but the development of the region should not be affected in the meanwhile. “Though the dispute on Kashmir remains unresolved, India and Pakistan are holding negotiations on other issues,” he said.

In a sharp reaction, TD Legislature Party deputy leader T. Devender Goud said the comparison was wrong as hundreds of people were losing lives in the protracted struggle in J&K. Several Congress leaders also objected to Dr. Reddy’s formulation. Dr. Reddy, however, wanted the members to understand the spirit of his statement as it was aimed at highlighting that the two countries were working on issues of mutual benefit despite the Kashmir dispute.
