Allot Rs. 100 crore, says panel

Staff Reporter

Members review minority welfare schemes in Ramanathapuram district

RAMANATHAPURAM: The State Minorities Commission has urged the State Government to allot Rs.100 crore for extending loans to people belonging to the minority communities to uplift them, said its chairman Rev. Vincent Chinnadurai.

Accompanied by panel members Jones Rooso and V.M. Mouriya Methapal, he reviewed various schemes being implemented for the welfare of minorities here on Thursday. Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar and Minority Welfare Officer K. Subbaiah participated in the meeting.

Mr. Chinnadurai said that though the Government increased allocation for minorities from Rs.7 crore to Rs. 30 crore, it was insufficient to meet the expectation of the beneficiaries. Out of Rs.1.25 crore allotted for the district, nearly 50 percent had been distributed.

The Collector assured that remaining amount would be distributed soon. He said that the Commission had demanded the State Government to issue grants to the colleges and schools started by the minorities after 1991. The ban should be lifted in the interest of minorities-run educational institutions that were catering to the educational needs of the poor and marginalised people. The Government must also give statutory powers to the State Minorities Commission.
