Man restrained from committing self-immolation

Staff Reporter

He alleges that authorities retrenched him and appointed another driver

BERHAMPUR: Administrative officials and police restrained Bijay Kumar Pradhan from committing self immolation along with his family in front of the office of the assistant commissioner of commercial tax in the city on Thursday.

Pradhan was a temporary employee of the Commercial Tax Department at Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district.

He was serving as a driver of the department since April 1996. He alleges that recently his authorities retrenched him and appointed another driver in his place on regular basis.

According to him he should have been made regular driver rather than being removed from the job.

Hunger strike

He along with his wife had sat on hunger strike in front of the Commercial Tax Office at Bhanjanagar from Jan. 1 to Jan. 8 with the demand of his reinstatement.

They were dissuaded from their hunger strike by the authorities by force. On Feb. 7 Bijay had written to district administration, police and Commercial Tax Department regarding his plans of self-immolation along with his family on Feb. 14.

As per his plans he reached Berhampur along with his wife, 10-year-old son and five-year-old daughter.

A police team along with the Berhampur sub-collector, Govind Biswal was ready in front of the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Commercial Tax in the city to refrain the family from taking any drastic steps. Police rounded up the family and took them to the Baidyanathpur police station.

Promises made

The assistant commissioner, K.C.Sethi and the sub-collector held discussions with the aggrieved family.

Following promises of reinstatement Pradhan and his family decided to refrain from their plans of self-immolation.
