Jail inmates attack jailor

BHUBANESWAR: About two dozens of inmates of Bonai Sub Jail in Sundargarh district on Thursday launched an attack on jail employees accusing that they were being served poor quality food.

The incident took place during afternoon when jailor had gone for an inspection inside the jail. Some under-trials were reportedly unhappy over the poor quality of food and had registered complaints against authorities before.

Reports reaching the capital city said three to five staff sustained very minor injuries. However, jail authorities refuted charges labelled by the inmates.

“Serving of poor quality of food could not have been the reason behind the disturbance in Bonai sub-jail. Officials from judiciary, revenue and human rights organisations regularly submit their report to Orissa High Court on food quality. These organisations could have raised the issue,” Inspector General of Police (prison) V. Thiagarajan said here. The incident was minor which was blown out of proportions, he said. The jail inmates returned their respective cells after sub-collector assured to look into their legitimate grievances, Mr. Thiagarajan said.
