TIRUCHI: Tiruchi-based Kavery Medical Centre (KMC) has acquired 33.97 per cent stake in Seahorse Hospitals in the City. It would soon come up with an open offer for another 20 per cent shares to take its total stake in the Seahorse Hospitals to nearly 54 per cent. Announcing this at a press meet here on Wednesday, the Managing Director of KMC S. Chandrakumar said that the 225-bedded hospital would increase its bed size to 400, with the acquisition of the 175-bedded Seahorse. The hospital would invest about Rs. 21 crore for the acquisition and pump in another Rs.10 crore to refurbish the Seahorse Hospital. KMC has earmarked Rs. 100 crore for its expansion plans over the next few years. The hospital plans to open five secondary care hospitals in tier II cities by partnering medical practitioners in those areas. Eight to ten primary care hospitals would be opened in Tiruchi and neighbouring districts. The total bed size of the hospital would go up to 1,000 by 2011, he said. Seahorse would be renamed as Kavery Medical Centre Speciality and begin speciality departments for occupational diseases, rheumatology, oncology and adolescence care. KMC, which has been offering postgraduate teaching programmes in medicine, surgery, paediatrics and anaesthesia, would introduce newer specialities, said the Medical Director of the hospital T. Senthilkumar. Short-term medical courses for doctors and new paramedical course are on the offing.
