HEALTHY WAY OF LIFE: Women of Poongudi village in Tiruchi district undergoing yoga training. TIRUCHI: Practice of ‘yoga’ for a couple of hours daily to stay fit has become a watchword among rural women in Perambalur and Tiruchi districts, courtesy the efforts being taken by the Village Reconstruction Movement (VRM), a Tiruchi-based non-governmental organisation. “There has been a growing awareness among the rural women these days about the efficacy of ‘yoga’ as a catalyst in healing ailments such as knee-joint pain,” says VRM secretary M. Balakrishnan. Mr. Balakrishnan says that the VRM took up the responsibility of offering free training programme to rural people on simple practices such as pranayama and there has been an overwhelming response from the villagers. So far, women of 25 villages including Chellipalayam, Narasingapuram, Chinna Pazhamalai, Murungapatti, Muthiapalayam -- all in and around Thuraiyur in Tiruchi district, and Periya Kanavai and Venbavur villages in Perambalur district have undergone the training. “Each session comprises at least 300 women,” he says. He started imparting training in ‘yoga’ to school pupils in these districts as part of his endeavour to popularise the concept of naturopathy among the students. The success of these training programmes had attracted a large number of persons, mostly women, in rural areas, he said. He follows up the training by visiting the villages after a few months. He can be contacted by dialling 0431-2483298 or 94432-29086.
