Deadline set for school buses

TIRUCHI: Transport Department has issued notifications to all educational institutions in Tiruchi zone asking them to comply with amendments made to Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Rules with respect to their vehicles within 30 days.

As per the amendments, all vehicles of educational institutions should be fully painted in sky blue colour. They should carry the inscription ‘school/college bus’ prominently in the front and the rear of the vehicle. They should also carry specified emblems to denote ‘school or college vehicles’ in the front, rear and on the two sides, Deputy Transport Commissioner S.Kanagaraj told reporters here on Thursday.

Autorickshaws and share autorickshaws should carry a board ‘school children’ while ferrying students to the school and back.

Mr.Kanagaraj said the Transport Department had intensified checks on vehicles to prevent overloading, drunken driving and tax evasion in the zone comprising Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts.

About 59 autorickshaws and share autorickshaws in the zone were issued notices on the charge of overloading and a fine of Rs.8,500 has been collected from the offenders.

A third time offence of overloading would result in the cancellation of permits of the autos and share autorickshaws.

Driving licences of 37 persons have been suspended temporarily for drunken driving based on police recommendation.

About 150 other cases were being processed for similar action.

The licences of 17 drivers have been cancelled permanently for causing accidents with heavy fatalities. The licences of 57 others, who had caused fatal accidents, have been suspended.

Special checks were also conducted to prevent collection of excess fare from passengers, during festival season. Answering a query, Mr.Kanagaraj said passengers generally did not come forward to give statements on the fares that they had paid, which effectively prevented the department from taking appropriate action.

Mr.Kanagaraj disclosed that the new Regional Transport Office at Tiruchi, which would also house the Deputy Transport Commissioner’s office, would be ready by March end. The new complex is being constructed at Pirattiyur in the City.

The Transport Department is also planning to introduce a computerised dedicated learners licence (LLR) at Tiruchi soon. Under the system, applicants would have to correctly answer six of the 10 questions posed to them by the computer.
