Nizam’s jewellery: kin seeks share

Special Correspondent

Great granddaughters allege being cheated of their share from sale proceeds

Seventh Nizam had created 28 trusts for the welfare of his legal heirs

As per the Trust Deed, their mother was entitled to Rs. 13.58 crore

Hyderabad: The dust of royalty never settles in Hyderabad.

The famed riches of the Nizam has many claimants. This time it is the turn of two great granddaughters of the seventh Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, to stake claim to the property and invaluable jewellery of the erstwhile ruler.

Shahzadi Shafia Sakina and Naqia Zainab, granddaughters of Prince Mauzzam Jah Bahadur, second son of the late Nizam, demanded a share in the sale proceeds of the Nizam’s jewellery.

Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, they said neither their mother, Fatima Fouzia, nor they had received a single pie from the jewellery acquired by the Government of India for Rs. 217.30 crore. As per the Trust Deed, their mother was entitled to Rs. 13.58 crore.

Corpus fund

The seventh Nizam had created 28 trusts for the welfare of his legal heirs. “As such we are entitled to shares in the corpus fund of the trusts as well as in the interest accrued on the funds,” the sisters said.

They accused Mukarram Jah and Mufakkam Jah (grandsons of the Nizam) and Mir Hasan Ali, a close family friend, of depriving them of their rightful share in the ancestral property. They also sought a share in the 11.5 kg gold ‘nazrana’ coin gifted by Mughal emperor Jehangir to their ancestors. The coin was clandestinely taken out of the country and mortgaged, they alleged. They vowed to continue their fight to get their rightful dues.
