TIRUCHI: The Border Security Force (BSF) has embarked on a major modernisation programme covering all fields of its operations including acquisition of latest weaponry, the Inspector General (Provisioning) BSF Virendra said here on Thursday. Advanced weapon systems including the Indian Small Arms System (INSAS) and rocket launchers had been acquired under the Rs. 2,300 crore modernisation programme, IG Virendra said in a brief interaction with the reporters after receiving the first batch of the “Anti-Material Rifle” developed by the Ordnance Factory, Tiruchi. The modernisation programme also covered areas such as surveillance and acquisition of water crafts. The BSF had nine Floating Border Outposts (BOP) to guard the western and eastern sectors. To step up vigilIG Virendra said the BSF had plans to acquire fast attack crafts as part of its effort to step up vigil in the border areas. There was a proposal to increase the strength of the BSF, he said.
