TAMBARAM: A sum of Rs.19.8 crore will be spent under a water supply improvement project in Nerkundram village coming under Villivakkam panchayat union in Tiruvallur district.
The village panchayat, according to officials, is reportedly the first rural local body in Tamil Nadu to be sanctioned funds for a development project under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission of the Ministry of Urban Development.
The project is expected to benefit 57,000 people in this panchayat, who are now dependent on water supplied through lorries.
P. Manoharan, president of the village panchayat, said the project cost would be met with 35 per cent grant (Rs.6.67 crore) from the Centre, 15 per cent grant (Rs.2.8 crore) from the State Government, 30 per cent (Rs.5.72 crore) again from the State Government through the Minimum Needs Programme and the remaining 20 per cent (Rs. 3.8 crore) from the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA).
Urban in character
The beneficiaries, including those seeking individual water connections, non-domestic sector and industries, would be charged deposits ranging between Rs.6,000 and Rs.25,000, Mr. Manoharan told The Hindu. He said that as early as January 2007, the panchayat council had passed a resolution, urging the State Government to upgrade it as a third grade municipality or at least as a town panchayat as it had the characteristics fit for an urban local body.
Government officials said the monthly tariff would be fixed on the basis of volumetric consumption ranging between Rs.7 and Rs.15 per thousand litres.
First project
Confirming that this was the first project to be actually sanctioned under the JNNURM, the officials said the project would be implemented by Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board. Officials said the project was designed, keeping in mind the requirements in 2038, when Nerkundram is expected to have a population of 1.2 lakh people.
