Fresh deposits will be collected from April

TIRUPUR: The Nallur Municipality has set a target to provide piped water connections to all the 1,888 applicants who have been waiting since 2006, by March.
The local body that had an unenviable record of having not a single piped water supply connection till recently has successfully provided 4,000 water connections so far. All these applicants have paid deposit amount as early as in August 2006.
Municipal Commissioner V. Manickam told The Hindu that the local has been planning to collect fresh applications in April. As many as 2,000 residents are expected to apply for water connections in the town, which would become part of Tirupur Corporation before next local body elections.
Though the local body is getting 2.5 million litres a day from Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board and New Tirupur Area Development Corporation Limited, it has been receiving complaints of irregular supply of water.
Admitting that the local body has been facing problems in water supply, Mr. Manickam said that it was due inadequate storage facility in the town.
The municipality is planning to construct three more tanks at Cheran Nagar, VGV Garden and Pon Muthu Nagar. In the first phase, it will construct a 10-lakh litre tank at Cheran Nagar. A proposal for the same has been sent to the Commissioner of Municipal Administration.
