Apex court stand on GM crops hailed
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: The Confederation of Indian Farmers Associations (CIFA) has welcomed observations made by the Supreme Court that would pave way for scientific field trials on genetically modified (GM) crops.
The trials could eventually lead to introduction of GM crops in the country in a big way, the association hoped. A press release issued by the association president P. Chengal Reddy said the introduction of GM crops significantly improved crop yields. The cotton production increased every year since the GM seed was first released in market in 2003-04. The area also went up from 76.30 million hectares in 2003-04 to 95.63 million hectares this year. However, a few environmental groups that received foreign aid tried to delay introduction of GM technology.
