TIRUCHI: For 25 slum youths from in and around Tiruchi, training in computer hardware and network engineering, sponsored the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board, has thrown open the doors for a promising career.

The three-month training, conducted by the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Career Development (IECD) of the university, also seeks to meet the demand for trained manpower in computer hardware servicing.

The Board will provide nearly Rs.1 lakh for conducting the programme. It will also give 20 students a monthly stipend of Rs.400, the university will bear the expenditure for another five students. Four more youths have been wait-listed in case of any dropout. Thirteen out of the 25 trainees are women. Candidates should have studied up to SSLC to qualify for the programme.

Inaugurating the programme, A. Mutharasu, Syndicate Member, Bharathidasan University, said there was good scope for the trainees to find employment as there was good demand for trained professionals in computer hardware servicing.

K.P. Doulath, Executive Engineer of the Slum Clearance Board, Tiruchi, said the training was intended to create employment opportunities for slum youths.

IECD Director K. Parthasarathy said the institute would find placement for the trainees through campus interviews at the end of the programme. The university would issue certificates. Practical training constitutes more than 80 per cent of the course component. Some industries have agreed to recruit the trainees.
