VADODARA: Yusuf Pathan spun England Lions out of the Duleep Trophy 2008 with fizzing off-breaks as the visitor was shot out for 165 in the second innings. Needing to score 27 for an outright win, West lost Ajinkya Rahane before overhauling the target in the match played at the Motibaug Stadium. Parthiv Patel and his happy bunch now face North Zone for the Duleep Trophy title at the Wankhede Stadium next week.

West’s nine-wicket victory came about through a focussed performance over four days. The wicket also played its part as it changed character during the course of the match. Chilly winds on the first two days were replaced by hot weather, which dried the track, resulting in turn for the spinners and the odd delivery keeping low.

England Lions, 14 for one overnight, folded up in tough conditions. Pathan (five for 35) and pace bowler Siddharth Trivedi (four for 28) did the damage. The former trapped batsmen by extracting vicious turn, gaining two leg-before verdicts. Trivedi, wicketless on the first day against the Englishmen accustomed to playing the moving ball, came back on the fourth day to strike lethal blows.

Express delivery

Joe Denly found a Trivedi express delivery sneaking between bat and pad to rattle the stumps. Liam Plunkett and Graham Onions were done in by balls keeping low. The Lions’s discomfort against spin on turning tracks saw them fold up in 82 overs. Michael Yardy, the Lions skipper, complimented West Zone, but felt his team fell short in its first innings.
