HYDERABAD: The unprecedented success of the Pavala vaddi scheme (bank loans at 3 per cent interest) to the self -help groups (SHGs) has surprised Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy himself.

“Its success has surpassed my expectations,” Dr. Reddy admitted while addressing a programme to mark the 87th birth anniversary of first Dalit Chief Minister of the country Damodaram Sanjeevaiah here on Thursday.

He said the success of thrift groups has prompted the Government to scale up lending to Rs. 7,000 crore this year.

Chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Castes, Buta Singh recalled his association with Sanjeevaiah, a ‘towering personality’ who won laurels from the parliamentarians during his stint as a Union Minister.

He said the welfare programmes implemented by the Rajasekhara Reddy Government was being emulated elsewhere in the country.

Empowerment

Planning Commission member B. L. Mungekar said the real empowerment of the weaker sections would be a reality if the welfare programmes meant for them percolate to the grassroots level.

He lauded the State Government’s robust economy by stating that AP was among few States that had achieved annual growth rate of 10.31 per cent.

Scholarships

He explained the various educational benefits that the Planning Commission had recommended to the Centre including reducing the minimum marks for post-matriculation scholarships for the Dalit students.

Social Welfare Minister Pilli Subash Chandra Bose and President of Damodaram Sanjeevaiah Memorial Trust, Ch. V.P. Murthy Raju spoke.
