Baby’s body found in bucket

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: In a shocking incident, the body of a newborn was found in a bucket at a house in Punnapra South here on Friday.

The police registered a case and placed Raziya, 35, the mother of the baby, under surveillance.

According to the police, relatives of Abdul Salam, Raziya’s husband who is working in the Middle East, and has reportedly not visited India for the last three years, noticed the baby’s body in the bucket this morning and alerted the police.

The police handed the body over to the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital (MCH) for a post-mortem and are waiting for a separate report from doctors as well to ascertain whether the baby died before birth or after birth. Since the preliminary inquest report by the police has not recorded any discernible signs of force used on the baby, investigating officers are waiting for the report to give any clues on whether the baby was killed by the mother, who is currently undergoing treatment at the MCH.

Police sources said the baby was suspected to be illegitimate, thus strengthening doubts that it could have been killed. Raziya, who is the second wife of Salam, was living with Salam’s children from his first marriage and Salam’s mother in the house. Neighbours told the police that it was three years since Salam last visited his home.

The Ambalapuzha police were investigating the case.
