THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan has said differences in the CPI(M) over organisational and ideological issues have mostly been resolved. Ideological issues, however, will continue to be debated as they arise. Talking to presspersons after a Cabinet meeting here on Friday, the Chief Minister said sectionalism in the party had been interpreted in different ways. DiscussionsIdeological issues such as alliance with the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Democratic Indira Congress had mostly been resolved through discussions. Similar issues would continue to be discussed and decided, he said. The other issues arose from regional conferences and the like. Complaints of local committees in such matters were being discussed and decided by the Polit Bureau. “The State conference took place after such issues, by and large, had been decided upon. Thus, those kinds of differences, in effect, are absent now,” Mr. Achuthanandan said.
Communists, like all thinking people, would continue to deliberate on issues such as the policies of the State and Central governments and the approaches of BJP and other parties. There would be opinions at the lower and higher levels. “We will discuss and resolve such matters,” he said. Asked what had happened at the end of the public meeting organised in connection with the State conference in Kottayam on Thursday, the Chief Minister said he had not seen that. “It had started raining when I began to speak. When the drizzle intensified, I stopped my speech and left. I did not see what had happened there after that.” Minor mattersMr. Achuthanandan said that the criticisms against the government at the party conference were on minor matters. The government was implementing a number of programmes. Some minor faults regarding them had been pointed out, such as the delay in extending the national waterways. Baby John memorialHe said the Cabinet had resolved to name the Chavara Government College as “Baby John Memorial Government College, Charava” after the late RSP leader. This was decided based on a proposal made by Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran. Mr. Premachandran said in a statement that it was the wish of all people, irrespective of political affiliations, that the late leader should have a memorial at Chavara. Baby John had personal relations with all sections of the people in his constituency. People’s demandPeople had raised the demand for a memorial at the meeting held at Neendakara to pay homage to the departed leader, and he had promised to fulfil their wishes. He was happy that it could be done so soon, Mr. Premachandran said.
