THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sugathakumari, poet and activist, on Friday, submitted a memorandum to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, urging her to intervene immediately to prevent implementation of the Athirappilly hydel project. In the memorandum submitted on behalf of the Athirappilly Protection Forum, Ms. Sugathakumari said the project, if implemented, would cause huge devastation to the fragile forest ecosystem in the area. The project would result in generation of only a small amount of power which would be no match to the rich biodiversity and the beautiful waterfall at Athirappilly that would be lost. She urged the Congress president to constitute an environmental wing for the party in Kerala so as to facilitate research and studies on environmental issues.
