Court finds no merit in bias charge in quota for local bodies
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday dismissed several petitions, except one, relating to reservation of posts of president and vice-president in local bodies, saying that it did not find any merit in the argument that the reservation is biased and done to favour a particular political party.
Justice Ashok B. Hinchigeri passed the order on several petitions challenging the reservation of posts of president and vice-president. Dismissing all these petitions, except the one relating to reservation of post of president and vice-president of Sadalga, the court said there appeared to be no basis for the petitioners contention that the reservation was done to favour the Indian National Congress.
Agreeing with the submissions of Advocate-General B.V. Acharya, the court said the Government had followed the reservation policy as per the law. It said reservation of post in a local body would have to commence from the category of Scheduled Castes and this was what the Government had done.
The judge, however, issued directions to the Government saying that it shall publish within six months from Friday a perspective roster for 10 years detailing the reservation of post.
