CPI demands EMU services in Coimbatore

TIRUPUR: The 20th conference of Communist Party of India, Coimbatore district, has urged the Southern Railway to introduce Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) services from Coimbatore to Erode, Tirupur, Pollachi, Mettuppalayam and Palakkad, considering the increasing volume of traffic on these sectors.
Conference
The conference held here on Wednesday wanted allocation of funds for the project in the ensuing Railway Budget. The party wanted more allocation for the ongoing gauge conversion between Coimbatore and Dindigul.
Stating that the high rental in Tirupur taking major portion of workers’ wages, the party asked the Tamil Nadu Housing Board to construct houses for workers and rent them out. It wanted the Governments to take steps to contain soaring prices of essential commodities.
Power cuts
The party wanted to end the unscheduled power cuts in the State and sought Government’s intervention in the issue of wage settlement for textile workers. It also wanted the Central and State Governments to implement marine discharge project to let of textile effluents into the sea.
Senior leader A.M. Gopu, Coimbatore MP K. Subbarayan, district secretary R.A. Govindarajan and several others spoke. Trade union leader Marathal hoisted the flag.
