INSPECTION: Commissioner of Municipal Administration Niranjan Mardi taking a look at the blueprint of the proposed terminus for mofussil buses at Tambaram Sanatorium on Thursday. TAMBARAM: Commissioner of Municipal Administration Niranjan Mardi on Thursday inspected the progress of some development works in Tambaram and Maraimalai Nagar Municipalities. The official visited the site of a proposed terminus for mofussil buses at Tambaram Sanatorium. The 4.26-acre site of land belonging to the Directorate of Public Health was transferred to the Tambaram Municipality in 2005 for developing it as a bus terminus, but there has been little progress. Proposals to develop the terminus at the site were revived and recently the Directorate gave its “enter upon agreement” to the local body. Mr. Mardi inspected the site and had a look at the proposed project on Thursday evening. Officials of the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply said it was proposed to build 30 bus bays. The long-term project is to build an integrated, modern Tambaram Bus Terminus for all government buses for which they were waiting for the Defence Ministry’s nod to part with 25 acres of land in Civil Lines. As it was expected to take some more time, they decided to build the terminus for at least mofussil buses on the 4.26 acre site in Tambaram Sanatorium. Among those who accompanied the Commissioner of Municipal Administration were Tambaram Municipal Chairman E. Mani and Regional Director of Municipal Administration M. Sebastian. Mr. Mardi earlier visited Maraimalai Nagar Municipality, where construction of roads in the residential localities and industrial estate were in progress. A Rs.12-crore package for laying roads inside the industrial estate has been provided to the municipality, where residents and industrial unit owners have for long been complaining about the pathetic condition of roads. Officials said work on laying the stretch V.O.C. Street was over, while work on the most important stretches, Anna Salai and Paavendar Salai, would be taken up soon. In addition to this, the municipality also plans to build a bus stand with a shelter at an estimated cost of Rs.2 crore and establish a compost yard at Rs.1.5 crore among other amenities.
