Karunakaran seeks fair deal for his supporters

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Senior Congress leader K. Karunakaran on Friday held a 30-minute closed-door discussion with All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi and reportedly sought a fair deal and a level playing field for his supporters.

As a follow-up, a 10-member delegation of his supporters, including T.V. Chandra Mohan, Kodoth Govindan Nair, N. Peethambara Kurup, M.V. Mani, M.T. Padma, N. Venugopal, Ibrahim Kutty Kallar, met Ms. Gandhi and submitted a memorandum seeking her intervention in the matter.

United Democratic Front (UDF) leaders Oommen Chandy, P.P. Thankachan, Ramesh Chennithala, K.M. Mani, P.K. Kunhalikutty, E. Ahamed, T.M. Jacob and M.V. Raghavan met Ms. Gandhi and sought her intervention in restoring the ration quota for the State. They also urged her to address several development issues related to Kerala. Leaders of the Youth Congress and other feeder organisations also met Ms. Gandhi. A Mahila Congress delegation, led by Simi Rosebel John, submitted a memorandum to the party president to intervene in the ration quota issue, besides taking the initiative to convene a meeting of Food Ministers to sort out the matter.

Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leaders E. Ahamed and P.K. Kunhalikutty broke ranks with the other UDF leaders and met Ms. Gandhi separately.

The meeting took place soon after the UDF leaders jointly met her. The special meeting took the Congress leaders by surprise.

According to IUML sources, the two leaders discussed the implementation of the Sachar Commission report.

They also briefed Ms. Gandhi about the difficulty their party was facing on account of the Left parties propaganda that the UPA government was not interested in implementing its recommendations.

Ms. Gandhi later made a reference to this in her speech stating that the campaign was false.
