Price hike

The hike in the prices of petrol and diesel is the unkindest cut in recent times, especially for the common man who is already groaning under the weight of all-round price rise. The result of the fuel price hike will be inflationary. The cascading effect will directly hit the middle classes. It will help if the views of the supporting parties and the opposition to surmount the crisis are dispassionately analysed and the decision on price hike is reviewed by the government.

The government’s stand that the hike is necessary to save the oil marketing companies from bankruptcy is unacceptable. Flush with the unexpected windfall in taxes and profits from oil companies, the government should actually reduce the price of petrol and diesel. It cannot run solely on a profit basis.

The Left parties should force the government to distribute some of its immense increase in revenues by reducing the prices of petrol, diesel and LPG by at least 25 per cent to enable the common man to afford such items.

C.P. Anandasubramanian,

As the world is speeding towards development and globalisation, it is natural for the people to want to transport themselves faster, whatever the cost. And with natural resources becoming scarce, a hike in the prices of non-renewable resources will become common. Time is not far off when having cars run by petrol will be a luxury. It is time the governments the world over promoted natural renewable resources.

Tiruchi
