Bayern held, Atletico loses

LONDON: Bayern Munich had to scrap for a 2-2 draw at Aberdeen and Atletico Madrid lost 1-0 at Bolton Wanderers as the UEFA Cup heavyweights struggled in last 32 first-leg matches on Thursday.

Four-time European champion Bayern twice came from behind at Pittodrie as the Scottish Premier League side threatened to repeat its achievement from 1983 when it stunned the Bavarians 3-2 in the quarterfinals of the Cup Winners’ Cup.

Atletico suffered its first away defeat in Europe this season.

Senegal striker El Hadj Diouf’s 74th-minute goal handed Bolton victory just seconds after the Spanish side’s Argentine striker Sergio Aguero had been sent off at the Reebok Stadium.

Two-time winner Tottenham Hotspur won 2-1 at Slavia Prague, Fiorentina overcame Rosenborg 1-0 in Norway, Hamburg SV took command of its tie against FA Zurich with a 3-1 win in Switzerland and Benfica beat Bundesliga struggler Nuremberg 1-0 in Lisbon.

The final is in Manchester on May 14.

The results (round of 32, first leg):

Aberdeen 2 (Walker 24, Aluko 41) drew with Bayern Munich 2 (Klose 29, Altintop 55); FC Zurich 1 (Hassli 88) lost to SV Hamburg 3 (Jarolim 49, Olic 68, Trochowski 77); Rosenborg 0 lost to Fiorentina 1 (Mutu 16); Slavia Prague 1 (Strihavka 69) lost to Tottenham Spurs 2 (Berbatov 4, Keane 30); Bolton Wanderers 1 (Diouf 74) bt Atletico Madrid 0; Benfica 1 (Makukula 43) bt Nuremberg 0. — Agencies
