KORAPUT: Tulsa Mali and Ratna Mali , the two women from Kandulguda village of Kundura block in Koraput district were brutally assaulted by a traditional healer when they had approached him to treat their children . While both of them had approached the medicos in the local PHC a few days ago to treat their children who were suffering from indigestion and some other ailments, there was no improvement in the health condition of the children, Tulsa said. There was no money to go to the doctor for the second time as they had already spent more than their capacity on purchasing medicines, she added. While they were waiting for alternative ways to treat their children, Bhagat Sethi an old man from their village invited Shyam Sunder Gouda, a traditional healer from Nuaguda of Digapur panchayat to get advice on his illness. Having got the opportunity to give treatment to their children by spending less, the two women desperately wanted Mr. Gouda to examine their children too and as a matter of tradition offered some rice . But all of a sudden he came and started assaulting them with a chain chased them on the streets of the village, they alleged. By the time the shocked villagers could do anything, Mr.Gouda had escaped from the village. While a case was registered in the Kundura police station, fresh questions were raised on the success of the initiatives to make ‘health for all’ a reality in the tribal dominated district of Koraput.
