BHUBANESWAR: Despite Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s assurance to review the disinvestments of Hirakud Industrial Works Limited (HIWL), its employees on Friday launched hunger strike demanding cancellation of share purchase agreement with the Kolkata-based private company, Versha Fabrics Private Limited (VFPL). Employees, who had been on dharna for 81 days, said they would abandon the protest only when all their demands including cancellation of agreement, payment of all outstanding and retaining of services of all employees under the administrative control of public sector IDCOL were met. They burnt effigy of State Industry Minister Biswabhushan Harichandan, who reportedly announced not to cancel the agreement with private company on the floor of Assembly. “The company violated all agreement and directives of High Court regarding settlement of dues of employees and operationalisation of HIWL and IDCOL Rolling Mills,” Gopa Krishna Das, working president of HIW Workers Union, said.
