Chamarajanagar: The Janata Dal (Secular) candidate, Suresh Naika and Congress candidate Shivananjaiah were elected as president and vice-president, respectively, of Chamarajanagar Municipal Council (CMC) here today. Mr. Naika, C.S. Mahadeva Naika from the Bharatiya Janata Party and Ms. Sudha from Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha party were the three candidates who filed the nomination papers to the post of CMC president, and Mr. Mahadeva, Mr. Shivananjaiah from the Congress, Mr. Shivanna from the BJP and Ms. Bhagyamma from the JD(S) filed the nomination papers for the post of CMC vice-president. The Congress, which has nine members, dominates the 31-member CMC, the JD(S) has 8, the BJP has 6, Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha has five, the BSP 1 and two independents. The president and vice-president posts were reserved for the candidates of ST and BCM (A) category respectively. All the 31 elected members of the CMC were present at the meeting. The Assistant Commissioner and election officer Sathyabhama who conducted the elections, announced the names of the winners. Mr. Naika was supported by nine Congress, eight JD(S) and 1 independent member, followed by one parliament member vote to secure a total of 19 votes to the post of CMC president. Mr. Shivananjaiah was supported by nine Congress, eight JD(S), 1 BSP, 1 independent member, followed by one parliament member vote to secure a total of 20 votes to the post of vice-president. After the election, Mr. Naika said he would work for the development of Chamarajanagar town.
