Maintain alliance ‘dharma’: DMK

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Friday urged its allies to adopt a “give-and-take” policy and maintain alliance dharma to strengthen the Democratic Progressive Alliance further.

At no point of time should they give an impression that they were party to the “evil designs” of political organisations that were rejected by the people in the last Lok Sabha election.

“Planned conspiracy”

The allies should not become victims of their “planned conspiracy,” it said.

The DMK’s administrative committee, which met at the party headquarters, stated that the activities of the alliance partners should not help communal forces to come back to power. Adopting as many as 18 resolutions with party president and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi presiding, the committee criticised All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Jayalalithaa for “pouring venom” on Dravidians by demeaning Tamils and their sentiments.

Her statement that the fight between “Asuras and Devas” would continue should be taken as a challenge to the entire Tamil people. As Ms. Jayalalithaa was acting against the interests of Tamils, it was the duty of the DMK to drive such forces away from the soil of Tamil Nadu.

The committee urged the Centre to take necessary steps to go ahead with the Sethusamudram project, as certain communal forces with the support of a few political parties were making contradictory statements mainly to sabotage the project with a political motive.

It thanked United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for allotting Rs 76.32 crore for setting up a research centre for Classical Tamil at Taramani.

The committee urged the Centre to amend the Constitution to give powers to States to decide about the quantum of reservation in education and to allow High Courts to conduct proceedings in the regional language. Through another resolution it wanted the Centre to make all regional languages, including Tamil, official languages.

Resolutions thanking the Chief Minister for making “Thai 1” as the Tamil New Year day and for providing scholarships to all SCs/STs for pursuing their higher studies, irrespective of the marks they had scored, were adopted.

It thanked Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin for successfully negotiating with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation to get assistance for the Chennai Metro Rail and the Hogenakkal water projects.

The party decided to organise the state conference of its women’s wing in Cuddalore in May.
