Computer training for government staff
N. Anand
CHENNAI: Prior to the roll-out of e-governance project in the State within the next few months, the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) has planned to make most of government employees information technology-savvy.
ELCOT district computer staff training centre is being set up in all districts to train at least 30 employees at one go. The centres will be headed by a branch manager.
Internet browsing
Two trainers have been outsourced on contract to train employees in Linux operating system and open source suite plus Internet browsing.
Talking to The Hindu on Wednesday, ELCOT Managing Director C. Umashankar said: “Some of the employees are well versed in Windows operating system. But, when we move into open source model after connecting our e-governance projects through the Tamil Nadu State Wide Area Network, they may feel unfamiliar with the Linux environment. So, we are conducting a five-day course for them. At the end of the course, they will be asked to take a test. Later, they will be given a course completion certificate.”
One-day crash course
“This is not a sudden initiative. We have been training government employees for the past six months, and our idea is to train 30,000 employees. It is a continuous training process. Later, we will train 435 assistant education officers and 300 Collectorate employees. A one-day crash course is being offered to those who don’t have time,” he said.
