Plea for seven more handloom clusters
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The Commissionerate of Handlooms and Textiles on Thursday requested the State government to sanction seven more clusters, with a total financial outlay of Rs.4.37 crore.
This is in addition to 28 handloom clusters cleared by the Centre over the last two years to improve the earning capacity of nearly 30,000 handloom weavers.
The proposal suggests new clusters in Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Virudhunagar, Erode and Salem districts. After they are approved, the State will forward them to the Centre for its sanction and financial support. The Weavers Service Centre will be the implementing agency for three clusters coming up at Esalam, Thirumalpur and Dadagapatti. The Handloom Export Promotion Council will take care of Sundarapandiam and Aruppukottai clusters. The Handicrafts and Handlooms Exports Corporation of India will help weavers in Chennimalai and Salem clusters.
Commissioner for Handlooms and Textiles M.R. Mohan The Hindu that the first three clusters would focus on producing korvai silk sari, low-cost silk sari and cotton-silk sari. The remaining would concentrate on the export market by resorting to value addition through embroidery and embellishment work. There are around 2,500 weavers in these places.
