High Court fines Union Home Ministry

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Friday fined the Union Home Ministry for not submitting an affidavit on why money was being spent in preserving the ashes of Subhas Chandra Bose at a temple in Japan even after the Mukherjee Commission had observed that the ashes were not that of Netaji.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice S.S. Nijjhar and Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose imposed a fine of Rs. 1,700 on the Ministry for its failure to submit the affidavit.

Two advocates of the High Court filed a public interest litigation petition in 2006 alleging that the Centre was spending money on preserving the ashes at the Renkoji temple in Japan even after the Mukherjee Commission had observed that they were not that of Netaji. They also alleged that government did not place the Commission’s report in Parliament. — PTI
