Minister fears grain shortage

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan has said that the country will have to face a serious shortage of foodgrains unless immediate steps are taken to enhance agricultural production.

He was addressing a seminar on “Retail Revolution for Agricultural Prosperity” organised by the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC) here on Friday.

The country’s current foodgrains shortage, he said, was around 5.5 million tonnes. However, it should ensure that the production of rice was stepped up by 10 million tonnes, that of wheat by 8 million tonnes and pulses by two million tonnes to overcome a possible major shortage in the future.

Mr. Rajasekharan said Union Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar had published a White Paper on agricultural production and related issues recently.

The paper had advocated that a minimum of one lakh jobs should be created in the sector. The country had registered 45 per cent increase in its tax collection and this should be utilised for welfare of the poor, he said.

The country was the fourth largest economy in the world and stood second in Foreign Direct Investment. Its annual retail business turnover has been estimated at Rs. 1 lakh crore with a 6.4-per cent annual growth rate. As a majority of the business community evinced interest in retail business, the possibility of creating 2.5 million new jobs in related areas in another three years looked bright.

He said that over five lakh big traders were keen on joining the supermarket chain. However, owing to the opposition by small and medium traders and political parties, many potential traders were said to be in search of different areas of business.

Deepak Mullick of BCIC, among others, spoke.
