HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has made light of Home Minister K. Jana Reddy’s claims of not coming across any intelligence report that warned about escalation of naxalite problem if separate Telangana State was formed. An official press release quoted Dr. Reddy informing the media in New Delhi that law and order was a subject handled by the Chief Minister. “Sensitive intelligence reports come to the Chief Minister and not the Home Minister.” Dr. Reddy set aside the criticism against his remarks likening Telangana with Kashmir issue claiming that he had not compared the two issues. He had only said that when countries could work for mutual cooperation despite international disputes, “we can set aside the differences and work for the development of the area”. The Chief Minister, who called on AICC president Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and others said he had come there to finalise Ms. Gandhi’s tour programme on March 14 when she would inaugurate the Pushkara Lift Irrigation scheme in West Godavari and the Rajiv Gandhi international airport at Shamshabad. Dr. Reddy said he had urged Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawer to implement the recommendation of the Commission on Agriculture Costs and Prices (CACP) for enhancing the minimum support price of paddy to Rs. 1,000-1,050 a quintal as also of other crops. He recalled that Prime Minister, acting upon a request made by him, had asked the Commission to adopt a realistic method of estimating agriculture costs. He ridiculed the contention of TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu that the UNPA’s rallies had made the CACP recommend a higher MSP. Mr. Naidu, he said, was probably under the impression that the Central Government was being run by the UNPA and that the CACP was working under his direction. SuggestionsAsked about TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu’s criticism that he was stalling the debt relief to farmers, Dr. Reddy asserted that farmers would stand to benefit to the extent of Rs. 1.5 lakh crore if his suggestions were followed or else, they would get only Rs. 65,000 crore.
