Puducherry: Professor A.R. Santhakumar of the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras on Friday stressed the need for putting quality roofing in buildings constructed in coastal areas to prevent structural damages. Delivering a lecture on the ‘Durability of concrete structures for Puducherry environment’, Prof. Santhakumar said, “We see concrete structures crack within a few years after construction of the building. The main reason for such problems is the quality of materials used and the workmanship.” One of the important steps to prevent damage was the putting up of good quality cover, he added. In addition to providing proper cover, the quality and quantity of water that goes into the construction of buildings matters. Concrete should never be left dry during the first 14 days. The structure should be designed keeping in mind the environment. B. Venugopal, Senior Vice-President, Ultratech Cement, spoke.
