NAMAKKAL: Three major irrigation canals in the district- Raja canal, Komarapalayam canal and Mohanur canal - would be improved at an estimated cost of Rs. 108 crore, Collector G. Sundaramurthi said. ProposalInteracting with the farmers and officials at a meeting organised at Pothanur near here on Friday, the Collector said that the Public Works Department (PWD) had submitted a proposal in this regard to the State Government. Farmers would be consulted and their views would be taken into account while improving the three canals. A large number of farmers were utilising the water from these canals to cultivate paddy, sugarcane and banana crops. It would take at least a year for the project to take off, he said. The district administration, meanwhile, had initiated steps to remove the shrubs from these canals, he told the farmers. Research centreMr. Sundaramurthi said that a proposal to establish a regulated market and research centre for the betel crop would be sent to the Government shortly. The Collector added that the administration would also initiate efforts to prevent the industrial units from letting out effluents in the river and water bodies. FertilizersArrangements were made to bring in more fertilizers from Tuticorin to ensure adequate supply of fertilizer to the farmers in the district, he said. MLA Nedunchezhian, PWD Executive Engineer Pinthamizhselvan and senior officials were present.
