PUDUCHERRY: Pathologists from various medical institutions in Puducherry and Karaikal regions and Chidambaram in Cuddalore district discussed and deliberated on a number of rare medical conditions at the Pathology Club meet held on Saturday.

The meet, organised by the Department of Pathology, Perunthalaivar Kamaraj Medical College and Research Institute (PKMC & RI), was aimed at bringing about ‘refined diagnosis for cases with diagnostic dilemma.’

“Students of clinical medicine learn by looking at patients, while those of pathology learn by looking at slides. This meet benefits the post graduate students and also helps to enrich their knowledge by presenting rare medical conditions,” M. Madhavan, Associate Professor of Pathology, PKMC & RI said.

The participating institutions presented medical conditions including that of single cell diseases and sickle cell disease with leptospirosis .

Apart from this, various specimens like that of ulcerated growth in the heel, growth in front of the ear and neck and salivary gland were discussed.

Such cases were rare to be seen and therefore enhanced the chances of learning, especially for students, Dr. Madhavan said.

Director of PKMC & RI N. Ananthakrishnan said pathology was the basis of all medicines. This was the first pathology club meet of the year and also the first one to be held in the institute.

Teaching faculty, pathology consultants and post graduate students from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital, Aarupadai Veedu Medical College, Government Medical College, Puducherry, Venkateswara Medical College, Vinayaka Mission, Karaikal, and Rajah Muthiah Medical College, Chidambaram, participated.

Assistant Professor N.G. Rajesh was present.
