Pleasant sight: A view of the rejuvenated Old Tambaram Tank. — TAMBARAM: Funds from multiple sources, including a significant contribution from residents, have helped rejuvenate the Old Tambaram Tank. The tank (‘Pazhaya Tambaram Kulam’), located on Mudichur Road, is an important landmark in West Tambaram. Before piped water supply to Tambaram was launched a couple of decades ago, residents around the tank depended on this water body for drinking and cooking. Over the years, it degenerated due to neglect by the government machinery and contamination through different forms, recalled long-time residents. The first attempts to rejuvenate the water body were made about five years ago. Today, the tank presents a bright picture with a walkers’ path, illumination and a compound wall. Devaki Gopi, councillor from Ward No. 31, said financial assistance to the tune Rs. 15 lakh was first released from the constituency development funds of the Tambaram MLA and South Chennai MP. Using this, the tank was first desilted and a compound built. The Tambaram municipality spent Rs. 3 lakh to carry out further improvement works. The work was taken up under the Community-Based Environment Development Programme of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority. While the CMDA sanctioned Rs. 8 lakh, members of the Old Tambaram Village Welfare Association pooled in Rs. 1 lakh, while the Tambaram municipality gave Rs. 1 lakh. The money was used to lay tiled walkers’ path and to install lights.
