Belgaum: The two-day district-level youth festival in Asundi village of Saundatti taluk, which concluded on Saturday, evoked good response. Hundreds of youth, including school and college students, from different parts of the district participated in various competitions held as part of the festival. The festival was organised by Belgaum Zilla Panchayat, Nehru Youth Centre and the Department of Kannada and Culture. A jatha depicting local culture was taken out through the thoroughfares of the village. Regional Commissioner Amita Prasad, who inaugurated the festival on Friday, called upon the youth in rural areas to actively participate in constructive works to develop their villages into model villages. The youth could form organisations to work at local level along with government agencies to achieve the common objectives of development and progress, she said. She asked the government officials to encourage any such initiatives from the youth. Presiding over the inaugural function, zilla panchayat president Nazir Ahmed Nadaf called for greater efforts to preserve diverse cultural facets in rural areas. The Stree Shakti groups could play a significant role in this direction, he added. Zilla panchayat vice-president Lakshmi Talwar, Saundatti Taluk Panchayat president Lakuni Kambar, Asundi Gram Panchayat president Vijaya L. and senior officials from the Department of Kannada and Culture and the Department of Women and Child Welfare were present.
